Frequently Asked Waxing Questions

Why is waxing better than other hair removal methods?

Waxing unlike shaving or depilatory creams, removes hair from the root allowing a brand new hair to grow out. This leads to new hair growth that is much more thin and sparse. Many clients come in simply because shaving causes irritating and painful razor bumps and they are sick of it. Waxing allows you to have that smooth hair free feeling without the worry of unsightly bumps.

What is the difference between a bikini, French and Brazilian waxing session?

The biggest thing to remember when it comes to Bikini/Brazilian waxing is that each salon has their own terms and definition of what these services include. At Sun Cheaters Tanning and Waxing we define each service as follows:
During a Bikini waxing all hair outside of the bikini will be removed, including inner thighs and stomach strip.
During a French wax only a strip will be left, typically called the “landing strip” all other hair including the inner thighs, stomach, and buttocks strip will be removed.
During a Brazilian wax ALL hair will be removed including, inner thighs, stomach, and buttocks strip.

Does it hurt?

On a scale of 1 to 10 a Brazilian wax is around a 5 or 6, this is just temporary pain and subsides very quickly. The amount of pain felt during the first waxing session is typically based upon how coarse the hair is. After the first waxing session the hair will become more sparse and thin, this will make your following sessions much more relaxing and less painful. Another issue with waxing is how uncomfortable the situation can be, however at Sun Cheaters we strive to make every client as comfortable as possible. In order to make the waxing session easier and less painful we suggest using relax and wax, no scream cream. Taking an Advil or Aleve can also reduce the redness and irritation associated with waxing.

How to prepare for my Brazilian waxing session?

At Sun Cheaters we recommend taking an Aleve or Advil 30 minutes before your waxing session. We also recommend visiting our location the day before your waxing session and purchasing Relax and Wax, No Scream Cream! This cream will help numb the area and will make the waxing session more comfortable. One of the biggest things to remember is to be calm, stressing out and becoming nervous over your waxing session can make it much worse.

How long does my hair have to be for waxing?

For waxing, especially Brazilians, the hair needs to be at least a ¼ to ½ inch long (usually about the size of a grain of rice.) Hair shorter than this can prove very problematic and can end in hair being left behind that is too short for the wax to remove. Hair that is longer than this can be very painful to the client and before each waxing session hair should be trimmed to this length. For clients that have been shaving hair this length usually takes anywhere form 6-14 days to grow.

How long will my waxing session take?

For a Brazilian waxing session the average time of waxing is about 20 minutes, however this time can vary depending on the amount of hair.

What exactly happens during a Brazilian waxing session?

All salons have different practices when it comes to waxing, however at Sun Cheaters we are highly trained waxing experts and have created the perfect Brazilian waxing technique for our clients.  First we will cover any questions you may have about the session. We will then explain the proper procedure for preparing for a Brazilian wax and leave the room allowing you to undress from the waist down. During the waxing session your waxing specialist will make sure to make you feel very comfortable and keep a conversation going allowing you to concentrate less on the session. Your waxing technician will then proceed to remove all of the unwanted hair.

Will I be in pain after waxing?

The biggest amount of pain associated with waxing is the initial sting when the pulling off the strip. After these few seconds the pain subsides substantially. You may notice tenderness for up to 24 hours, and should refer to the Waxing Aftercare Article for proper after care instructions. Very minimal amounts of bleeding may be experienced during your first waxing session, but should not be noticeable or painful.

Will my hair grow back darker and thicker?

Absolutely not!! Unlike shaving, waxing promotes softer thinner hair and usually takes 3 to 6 weeks to grow back.

How often do I need to expect to come in for my waxing session?

After your first few sessions where you will need to come in every 3 to 4 weeks, waxing sessions can usually be spaced out over 4 to 6 weeks. As you continue waxing you will notice a growth pattern and also the hairs slowly diminishing.

What is the appropriate tip amount for a Brazilian waxing service?

If you are very satisfied with your technician a $15 tip is perfect. If your technician did an o.k. job $10 is an appropriate amount, and is you felt uncomfortable or had any problems with the service a $5 tip is appropriate.

I've waxed in the past and the technician did not remove all my hair, how come this happened?

When a client has been shaving it can take anywhere from 1-4 waxing sessions for the hair to grow correctly on the proper hair cycle. This means that on your first waxing session some hairs may be too short to be removed and although your technician should perform tweezing to remove the unwanted hairs, sometimes there is so many it is impossible to remove all of them. Until the time comes when the hair cycle is functioning properly it is the responsibility of the client to come in for touch up sessions.

How long before my wedding should I get my Brazilian Wax?

You should get your first waxing session six weeks before you wedding and you’re second waxing between 2-4 days before your wedding.

Where should I go to get a Brazilian/bikini wax?

First off you should definitely do your research; Brazilian waxing is a specialty and just because a salon or esthetician is offering these services does not mean they know what they are doing. Make sure to choose a reputable and upscale day spa that specializes in Brazilian waxing. Typically you would want to steer clear of nail salons or salons that perform less than 15 Brazilian waxes a week. Try and remember that the price is not always an indicator of the session, some salons charge upwards of $80 for a Brazilian wax, but merely offer this service and may not have the necessary experience to perform a great service. Also keep in mind that sometimes a $20 waxing session is just that; a $20 waxing session and more than likely you will not be satisfied.
