5 Tips for College This Year

It’s that time again, that’s right, it’s back to school. Beach days and summer waves are slowing down and will soon be replaced with study sessions, late nights, and a busier schedule. Here are some tips to make this your best semester (or year) so far.

1. Make a Game Plan

Proper planning prevents poor performance. Plan your class schedule so that it is realistic for you. Does this schedule cooperate with your work schedule or campus activities? Be sure to read your syllabus for each course so you know what is expected for the semester. If your syllabus includes a course schedule, fill in test and quiz days in your planner in advance (yes, you need a planner). Make a schedule for homework, studying, fun, and exercise. Making a plan or schedule helps get you in the routine of getting. stuff. done.

2. Make Healthy Habits

With a busy schedule and full course load, it’s easy to live on chicken nuggets, coffee, and 4 hours of sleep. Make an effort to make healthy choices during the school year. Pack healthy snacks such as carrots and hummus, almonds, or other fruits and veggies to help you skip the potato chips and pizza rolls. While 8 hours of sleep might not be the perfect number for everyone, adequate sleep is essential for academic performance and success in college. Set a sleep routine and make a good night’s rest a priority. Lastly, take advantage of ways to stay active on campus. Whether that’s an intramural team or a group class at your university’s gym, make time for exercise, which is also great for stress.

3. Reduce Stress

While stress is sometimes unavoidable, especially in college, you can create habits to reduce stress and cope with stress. Procrastination can be a love-hate relationship, ok well mostly hate. Procrastination is one of the leading causes of stress in school, and is often associated with poorer performance and a lower sense of wellbeing. Use that planner and routine you set in tip #1. When stress does creep up, use healthy ways to cope with stress. Whether that may be a spin class, yoga, painting or lounging at the pool, find what works for you.

4. Be Social

Let’s be real, college isn’t all business. It’s a time to try new things, set new goals, and have Make time to relax and enjoy everything college has to offer. Join a sorority or fraternity, go to a club meeting, attend events on campus, go tailgating, try new places, and meet new people. Make the most of your college experience by Studies show that being involved in your school’s community can also improve academic performance, as long as you don’t put too much on your plate.

5. Protect Your Skin

Nothing completes an outfit like a glowing tan. But be careful not to spend too many hours at the pool, beach or dare we say it; a tanning bed. Tanning is often a big part of college culture, but women aged 18-25 are the most vulnerable to unhealthy habits that could lead to melanoma. According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is one of the most common cancers in young adults. A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings noted that melanoma has increased 8 fold in women 18-39 years old in the last 40 years. Whether you want a tan for a formal, birthday outing, or wedding, a natural spray tan is the safer (and faster) way to achieve the perfect shade of bronze.
